Renew An Existing Tax Disc

If your vehicle was previously taxed in Ireland, then the following will be required:

  1. If there has been no changes made to either the particulars (i.e. engine, colour, tax class, etc.) or to the ownership of the vehicle since it was previously taxed, a fully-completed and signed RF100b form. These are sent by post directly to the registered owner from the Vehicle Registration Unit in Shannon, Co. Clare, approximately 2-3 weeks before the expiry date of the tax disc. They are pre-printed with the owner and vehicle details, so all you have to do is enter your insurance information, the period you wish to tax the vehicle for, and sign it.
  2. If there is a gap between (the end of) the month your tax disc expired and (the start of) the month in which you renew it, or you are declaring non-use of the vehicle, or a change of ownership has occured since the last tax disc was issued, or you never received an RF100b form, a fully-completed and signed RF100a form.
  3. If you the particulars of the vehicle have changed since the vehicle was last taxed (i.e. a new engine has been installed, the vehicle's colour has been changed, etc.), then you should use a fully-completed and signed RF111 form instead. This should be submitted with your vehicle registration documents, which will be amended to reflect the changes made to the vehicle.
  4. The correct fee. (To determine the correct fee, please check the motor tax rates section.)

Note: In reference no. 3, above, if your vehicle was first registered in Ireland on, or after, 01-January-1993, the Motor Tax Office (MTO) will retain your old registration documents. A new registration certificate (showing the amendments made to your vehicle record) will be sent to you by post from the Vehicle Registration Unit in Shannon, Co. Clare. This will usually arrive within 5 working-days (but allow for seasonal delays in the postal system, such as at Christmas time, etc.). You will still receive your tax disc as normal from the MTO.

On the other hand, if your vehicle was first registered in Ireland before 01-January-1993, and has an old-style "registration book", the MTO will simply amend the details on that and hand/post it back to you, along with the new tax disc.
