First Tax On A Used Vehicle
If you have recently purchased a private vehicle that has been previously taxed in Ireland (by somebody else)
and that tax disc is about to expire (or has already expired), you'll need the following in order to re-tax it:
- A fully-completed and signed RF100A form. If the
previous tax disc expired after (the beginning of) the month in which you became the registered owner, you may
be liable for motor tax arrears, unless you make a declaration of non-use on your RF100a form.
- The correct fee. (To determine the correct fee, please check the motor
tax rates section.)
Note: If a notification of a change-of-ownership (to have the vehicle changed from
somebody else's name into yours) has been sent to the Vehicle Registration Unit in Shannon, Co. Clare, you
must wait until the ownership has changed into your name before you can obtain a tax disc. This usually takes less
than 5 working-days. Sometimes, because of postal delays, etc., the change of ownership may have taken place, but
you just haven't received the new documents yet.
Therefore, if there seems to be a delay, you should contact your local Motor Tax Office, who will be able
to check if the vehicle is now registered to you. If it is, you can tax it right away (as you do
not have to produce the registration document to do so).
