Change of Ownership
If you sell your vehicle, it is very important that you follow the correct procedure to change the vehicle
registration details to the new owner as soon as possible.
If the vehicle has been sold privately, you should do the following:
- If the vehicle was registered in Ireland before 01/01/1993, an RF200 form
should be completed and signed by both the buyer and the seller and sent to your local
Motor Tax Office, along with the Registration Book (sometimes
called a "log book").
- If the vehicle was registered in Ireland on, or after, 01/01/1993, and has a Vehicle Licensing Certificate (VLC) or, if it
was registered in Ireland, or subject to a previous change-of-ownership on, or after, 28/05/2004, and has a
new-type Vehicle Registration Certificate (VRC), the
change-of-ownership section on the VLC/VRC should be completed and signed by both the
buyer and the seller and it should be sent to the Vehicle Registration Unit, Department of the Environment,
Heritage, & Local Government, Shannon, Co. Clare. A new-type VRC will then be sent to the new owner by
post.
If the vehicle has been sold to a motor dealer/garage, you should do the
following:
- If the vehicle was registered in Ireland before 01/01/1993, an RF200 form
should be completed and signed by both the motor dealer/garage and the seller and sent
to your local Motor Tax Office. However, in this case, the Registration Book (sometimes called a "log book") should be given to the motor dealer/garage.
- If the vehicle was registered in Ireland on, or after, 01/01/1993, and has a Vehicle Licensing Certificate (VLC) or, if it
was registered in Ireland, or subject to a previous change-of-ownership on, or after, 28/05/2004, and has a
new-type Vehicle Registration Certificate (VRC), then an
RF105 should be completed and signed by both the motor dealer/garage and the seller.
This form should be immediately sent to the Vehicle Registration Unit, Department of the Environment,
Heritage, & Local Government, Shannon, Co. Clare. However, in this case, the VLC/VRC should be given to the
motor dealer/garage.
